If there is the space and a tree is wanted to attract birds year round a Puriri is a good choice. Forms a large spreading tree with dark glossy green leaves.Pink flowers are produced almost year round & these provide the nectar which attracts bell birds & tuis. Flowers are followed by large pinkish/red berries. Protect from frost when young. Good on the coast and for its timber. Can be pruned.

Needs rich soils and protection from frosts. Seen to perform best in pots. Sun or semi-shade. Foliage is most attractive in flower arrangements & lasts very well. Does not flower.

A slow growing tree which can be kept at shrub proportions by regular clipping for many years. Foliage is green with reddish tonings in winter months. Racemes of white flowers clothe the tree in early summer. Young foliage is used in floral work

Poor Knights Lily
A rare and beautiful lily which has brilliant red bottle brush flowers and flax-like leaves. As the Xeronema grows naturally where roots are restricted, it is advisable to plant it in a large container where these conditions can be simulated. Make sure drainage is good and the pot is placed in a warm and sunny position. You may have to wait many years for flowers but the wait is worthwhile.
