A hardy and quick growing tree. Good for shelter on the coast or inland. Dark red flowers. Endemic to coastal areas and off shore islands to East Coast. Naturalized in many other areas. This plant favours steep slopes, cliff faces, rock stacks and is dominant on offshore islands, and on occasion can be a significant component of dune forest.
Prefers full sun and dryer soils.
